October 2014

This newsletter comes with some great news here at Converted Organics. December 5th marks new company ownership. With it comes new investment, leadership and energy. I’m proud to say Converted Organics is now owned by Curtis Gill and Steve McShane. The CEO is Curtis Gill.
As we bring 2014 to a close we look back on quite a bit to be thankful for. During 2014 we had strong sales, lots of new customers and a new product registered with the California Department of Food and Agriculture. Best of all, we saw a year with more R&D related to our core products than in the last five years.
Looking to 2015, I am thankful for your business and support for our awesome fertilizer products. Our products build soil health and in return delivery higher quality and yield in the farm, garden and hydro arenas.  Here’s to a safe and happy holiday and new beginnings as we grow together. Feel free to contact me at any time at (831) 206-8414  or wlorente@convertedorganics.com.

Did you know Converted Organics exports its high performance liquid organic ferlitzers to Mexico? Having just returned from the state of Jalisco, Mexico, I am proud to report record breaking strawberry yields and increasing acres in production in Mexico. The dessert season has had little or no snags and Mexico has been largely the same way. When you’re ready to order for you Mexican growers, I’m ready to help you. Contact me directly at (831) 345-3240   or joe@convertedorganics.com

Report from Research & Development

By: Sarah DeVilla

Research in the field of science gives birth to progress. That is what I was always told in college. Here at ConvertedOrganics we have three labs testing and re-testing our products at any given time. We test and monitor our product on seeds and germination in our state of the art laboratory. We also test our products on-site in our secure raised beds.  Finally, we test our products in the field at any of more than a half a dozen ranches using both existing and new products. The trial I would like to highlight for E-newsletter is the success of our products on turf grass. The root mass and development of a healthy stand at low application rates is absolutely astounding as seen from the photos below.  For more R&D success, feel free to contact me at any time at sdevilla@convertedorganics.com

The Converted Organics Process

Making Quality Fertilizer for You

At the heart of the Converted Organics process is a technology that permits nature to take its course. In short, the technology relies on the same principles that allow you to compost food waste in your backyard. Like backyard composting, the process utilizes oxygen to avoid the build up of strong odors that would occur under anaerobic conditions. The process takes this one step further by introducing additional oxygen into a closed, carefully monitored tank, as a way to greatly accelerate the digestion process. What would take months to compost can be quickly converted to a useful all natural fertilizer product in a matter of hours.

 Summer Off Site Trials Report

Here at Converted Organics we are committed to constant and never ending improvement. As such, we depend on key partnership with customers where we can trial products on new high value crops. This summer we were especially proud of the results we saw in a raspberry and lemon trial.

This photo features impressive new growth and development of fruit when our 2-2-2 liquid was applied at a rate of ten gallons per acre once a month. The orchard is on certified organic ground.

raspberries

Raspberries have been a growing crop for our application.  The grower applied applied 5 gallons per acre of both our LC and Pacific Choice Fish fertilizer.  This photo demonstrates rapid, cane development where the grower boasted an increase of at least 20% in yield.

Converted Organics Joins Ag Tech Solutions Group

This fall, Converted Organics played a founding role in the establishment of a new Salinas Valley Agriculture Technology Solutions Group. The initial meeting amassed more than 50 professionals in Central Coast California Agriculture. The next meeting is November 18th.  It is likely this group will partner with Converted Organics and Hartnell College to produce the 2015 Ag Technology Summit at our Gonzales production facility. For more information on the November 18th meeting, please contact Sarah DeVilla at  sdevilla@convertedorganics.com.

There are also some test seeds in the ground so keep an eye out for those updates. Things should pick up by the end of the month!

Conventional Strawberry Trial Success

This year, Converted Organics embarked on our most thorough strawberry trial in company history. results showed improvements in root development and berry production. The photos here do not do justice in demonstrating the astounding results. The treated ground resulted in greater size and near double the harvest this summer.

Lisa’s Crockpot Recipe of the Month

One of our favorite staff members, Lisa, loves her crock pot.  In fact, she’s always coming up with new favorite recipes.  Here at Converted, we’re ready to share the best with you on a monthly basis.  Here’s the latest…..

Lisa’s Creamy Chicken and Rice Slow Cooker Recipe!

INGREDIENTS:
  • 4 Tbsp unsalted butter, divided

  • 1 med or 1/2 large onion, finely diced

  • 2 large carrots, grated on the large grater or cut into matchsticks

  • 1 1/2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs, trimmed of fat and cut into 1 inch pieces

  • 2 tsp salt (we used sea salt), divided

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper, freshly ground

  • 2 bay leaves

  • 1 cup dry white wine such as Chardonnay

  • 5 cups hot reduced sodium chicken broth

  • 2 cups medium grain rice such as Jasmine rice (un-rinsed)

  • 1 head garlic

  • 1/3 cup fresh Italian parsley, finely chopped

  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese, plus more for servings

DIRECTIONS:

Using a dutch oven or heavy bottom pot with tight fitting lid, over medium/high heat, add ¼ cup olive oil and 2 Tbsp unsalted butter. Once butter is melted and hot, stir in diced onion, grated carrots and 1 tsp salt. Sautee until soft and golden (8-10 min).
Add trimmed, chopped chicken thighs, 2 bay leaves, another 1 tsp salt and ¼ tsp black pepper. Saute, stirring occasionally until chicken is golden on all sides (5 mins).
Increase the heat to high and add 1 cup white wine. Boil down the wine, scraping the bottom until most of the wine has evaporated.
Add the hot chicken broth, then stir in the rice.
Without separating the cloves (leaving the root end intact), slice the end off a whole head of garlic to expose the garlic cloves. Set the whole head into the center of your rice, sliced side down. Bring to a rolling boil, then reduce heat to low, cover and simmer until rice is fully cooked (15 mins).
Turn off the heat, remove garlic head (you can either push the cloves of garlic out into the rice and eat it or discard it) and quickly stir in remaining 2 Tbsp butter until fully incorporated. Finally, stir in chopped parsley and ½ cup parmesan cheese. It should be creamy. Serve right away or leave the lid on to keep it warm until serving. Garnish with more fresh parsley to serve.

Strawberry Product Trial Success

Converted Organics is committed to constant product testing and development.  Under the leadership of Product Development Specialist, Phil Giles, this crop of Chandler Strawberry plants are being evaluated for root development and plant vigor subject to application of popular Converted Organics Liquid Organic Treatments.

Here’s what Phil had to say about the trial:

Today I hit the road with Joe and visited a few of out trials. We had great responses from everyone. They all noticed that the fruit they were picking was larger and some were able to pick a plant 3 times a week (plants without our product usually get picked twice a week). A grower for Reiter, which is one of Driscoll’s largest growers, said “We have noticed that the treated strawberries are bigger. We have been able to pick the treated plants 3 times a week versus the non-treated, we are only picking twice a week.”

Should you wish to trial our product in your operation, please contact Joe Garcia at joe@convertedorganics.com or (831) 345-3240.

May 2014

It is with great pleasure we welcome back the spring season here at Converted Organics.  Thanks to recent facility upgrades and keen planning, we’ve enjoyed uninterupted supply of our popular liguid organic fertilizer products.

As you will see in this newsletter, we are still beaming from the positive feedback from the 1st Annual Ag Tech Summit.  Thanks to the hard work of Spirit Vision Video Studios, we were able to capture all of our sessions on video.  I especially liked the recap video and “shout-outs” offered by attendees.  I hope you take the time to watch them.  We’ve begun planning on an “Ag Tech Grower” talk for June 25th that I hope you can attend.

I also want to comment on how thrilled I am by the results from our trial beds here in Goznales, CA.  Very soon here, we will start our summer crops.  Did I mention the “tomato throw down” we have going on with a dozen or so hobby gardeners?  Read on to find out more.

Converted Organics Keeps The Nitrogen Where You Need It

Study after study prove the benefit of using organic fertilizers to keep on feeding in the root zone.  While higher nutrition in conventional fertilizer is tempting, our products stay put and keep on feeding all season long.  This saves you money and keeps the product from leaving the root zone and ultimately entering the water table.   We invite you to contact one of our sales professionals today to give you more detail and professional advise on precise application.

  • 1/2 cup diced white onion
  • teaspoon minced garlic
  • (24 ounce) jar spaghetti sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
